Technical Information
In a DNA Aunt/Uncle Test, a buccal (mouth) swab sample is collected from both the child and the potential aunt or uncle. These samples contain cells, each of which holds a complete set of genetic information in the form of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), a unique “genetic blueprint” much like a fingerprint.
In the lab, DNA is extracted from the cells, and specific regions are amplified using a process called PCR (polymerase chain reaction). The test analyzes 16 to 27 specific regions known as short tandem repeats (STRs). These STRs are highly variable DNA sequences repeated multiple times throughout the genome, making them a reliable tool for confirming or refuting biological relationships.
