The test can be taken by either the grandmother, grandfather, or both to determine if a genetic relationship exists with the grandchild. If the parents are available for testing, we recommend using the DNA Paternity Test or DNA Maternity Test instead of the grandparent test.

Technical Information

In a DNA Grandparent Test, a buccal (mouth) swab sample is collected from both the child and the potential grandparent(s). These samples contain cells, which hold DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)—a unique genetic blueprint similar to a fingerprint.

In the laboratory, DNA is extracted from the cells and specific regions are amplified using a process called PCR (polymerase chain reaction). Our test examines 16 to 27 of these regions, known as short tandem repeats (STRs). STRs are areas of DNA where a short sequence is repeated multiple times, and they vary greatly among individuals. Analyzing these STRs provides a precise method for confirming or disproving biological relationships.

The reason that you are not supposed to drink or have anything in the mouth for an extended period prior to collection is to ensure that we have enough buccal cells to complete the test. If there are not enough cells to complete the test, then the results will not be released and a recollection will be required.
